Participants Registration

20 September 2024 - 15 November 2024

This hackathon is designed for undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and industry professionals. Participants will register by completing a questionnaire:

 

  • Undergraduate students: Can register as a team of up to 3 members.
  • Postgraduate students: Can register as a team of up to 2 members.
  • Industry professionals:  Can register as a team of up to 2 members.

 

This information will help organizers distribute participants into balanced teams. Each team will consist of a mix of undergraduate students, postgraduate students, and industry professionals to ensure a fair distribution of expertise. For example, a team might include 2 undergraduate students, 2 postgraduate students, and 1industry professional.

 

Participants will be evaluated to ensure they meet the qualifications for the next stage, promoting a fair distribution of expertise within each team.

Announcement of Selected Participant for the Hackathon

19 November 2024, Tuesday

Selected participants are notified and provided with key information, including their teams, assigned SMEs, hackathon objectives, and deadlines.

Teams schedule their first virtual meeting with their SME to:

  • Understand the hackathon structure and goals.
  • Review the list of problem statements.
  • Start discussing initial ideas and approaches.
Team Preparation

20 November 2024 - 3 December 2024

Objective: Teams explore problem statements, brainstorm solutions, and prepare for abstract submission.

Key Activities:

  1. Subject Matter Expert (SME) Kickoff: Teams meet their SME to clarify expectations and explore potential problem statements.
  2. Research & Brainstorming: Teams analyze problem statements, brainstorm ideas, and refine their focus.
  3. Subject Matter Expert (SME) Check-In: Teams share their progress and receive guidance to refine their ideas.
  4. Finalize Problem Selection: Teams confirm their chosen problem and outline their approach.

Outcome: Teams are aligned and ready to submit their abstracts with well-developed ideas.

Problem Statement Selection & Abstract Submission

4 December 2024, Wednesday

Teams officially select their problem statement (maximum two teams per problem) and work on an abstract outlining their solution.

To submit, teams must:

  1. Visit the hackathon website.
  2. Click on “Submit your Abstract.
  3. Complete the submission form and upload their abstract by the deadline.

SMEs are available to provide support and feedback as teams refine their abstracts.

Deliverable: A finalized abstract submitted via the website by the deadline, including:

  • The chosen problem statement.
  • Key objectives.
  • A description of their solution approach.
Hackathon Day

7 December 2024, Saturday

Arzanah Building, SAN Campus, Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi

  • Welcome address by the event organizer, emphasizing the importance of green solutions in combating water scarcity.
  • Keynote speech on the significance of green solutions in addressing water scarcity.
  • Overview of the hackathon's objectives, guidelines, and judging criteria.
  • Introduction of judges, evaluators, and mentors.
Project Development Stage 1: Planning and Design9:30 - 10:45 am

In this stage, teams will begin mapping out the structure and design of their solution. Subject Matter Experts will be there to offer feedback and assistance as teams develop their project plans.

 

While Planning and Designing:

  • What is the root cause of the problem, and how does your solution address it effectively?
  • How does your approach align with the judging criteria, such as scalability, sustainability, and technical soundness?
  • Have you identified the key resources, technologies, or methods needed for implementation?
  • What steps will ensure your solution is innovative yet feasible for real-world application?
Coffee Break and Networking10:45 am - 11:15 am
Project Development Stage 2: Solution Development11:15 am - 12:30 pm

Teams shift their focus to transforming their project plans into tangible solutions. They work on building and testing their concepts, with ongoing mentorship and feedback to guide their progress.

 

As You Develop Your Solution:

  • Which technical aspects of your solution require immediate validation or testing?
  • How does your approach stand out in terms of innovation and market potential?
  • Have you considered the adaptability of your solution to different contexts or scales?
  • Are there any gaps or weaknesses in your design that need to be addressed now?

 

Lunch Break and Networking12:30 - 1:30 pm
Project Development Stage 3: Solution Refinement1:30 - 2:30 pm

Teams continue to refine and improve their solutions based on feedback received during the previous stages. With ongoing mentorship and feedback to guide their progress.

 

While Refining Your Solution:

  • How well does your solution align with the judging criteria, including technical soundness and impact?
  • Are there additional data points, visuals, or models you can develop to support your idea?
  • Is your value proposition clear and compelling for potential end-users or stakeholders?
  • Have you thought about the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and its next development steps?

 

Project Development Stage 4: Presentations Preparation2:30 - 3:00 pm

Teams will refine their pitches with ongoing mentorship and constructive feedback to guide their progress.

 

As You Prepare to Pitch:

  • Is your pitch structured to engage the judges while meeting the evaluation criteria?
  • How can you emphasize the market potential and real-world adaptability of your solution?
  • Do your visuals, prototypes, or demonstrations effectively support your key points?
  • Have you rehearsed to ensure your presentation is concise and impactful?

Pitch Presentations

Teams will present their ideas to the panel of judges, showcasing their innovation, collaboration, and potential for real-world impact.

 

To Keep in Mind During Your Pitch:

  • Are you clearly articulating the problem and how your solution addresses it?
  • Does your pitch highlight the key evaluation criteria, such as impact, technical soundness, and market readiness?
  • How effectively are you engaging the judges and audience with your storytelling and delivery?
